34057 1965 Southampton Central
With the 10.55 Plymouth to Brighton express, 34057 Biggin Hill makes a splendid picture on its home turf with that imposing clock tower (3.31pm) adding to the view. Originally thought to be May 25th but since dissproven as is the date of Jim Carters second visit to the area on June 11th.
This engine joined 34039 Boscastle on the former Great Eastern Section of the Eastern Region in May 1951, followed also by 34065 Hurricane when there was renewed interest in use of the class on that section to relieve Eastern Region B1s on secondary passenger workings, notwithstanding the fact that earlier such tests two years earlier with 34059 Sir Archibald Sinclair had been less than impressive. Following early axle troubles with the newly introduced Britannias these three were supplemented by the transfer of 34076 41 Squadron and 34089 602 Squadron , the latter being the first to return to Southern Region metals in January 1952; the last one to leave was 34057 in June 1952.
