34057 1950s Exmouth Junction

34057 1950s Exmouth Junction

Biggin Hill workied one of the Enthusiasts' Specials over the Somerset and Dorset line on what was to be the final weekend that the line remained open to traffic, namely Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th March 1966. 34057 had worked in company with 34006 Bude on the Saturday Specials , and with 34013 Okehampton on the very last run on the Sunday. Biggin Hill was later destined to be the last of the original unrebuilt members of the class remaining in service when finally condemned from Salisbury in 1967 but plans for its preservation did not materialise and it was disposed of at Cashmores at Newport.

Peter Kerslake says "34057 "Biggin Hill" in company with 34065 "Hurricane" had followed 34039 "Boscastle" on to the Eastern Region at Stratford depot in May of 1951 when those in authority were considering their use as substitutes for the Eastern Region's own "B1" class on secondary passenger duties whilst subsequent axle problems with the new "Britannias" in October of that same year resulted in sister engines 34076 "41 Squadron" and 34089 "602 Squadron" joining them.
34057 "Biggin Hill" spent much of its time while at London' Eastern Region Stratford depot working boat trains such as the "Day Continenta " and the "Scandinavian" between Harwich on the Essex coast and Liverpool Street and she remained on the Eastern Region longer than any of her four sisters, not returning home until June of 1952."
