34038 1964-07 Southampton Central
Note the maroon coaches suggesting an inter-regional train not a London-bound express. The Class 4 will follow Lynton out.
Ian Simpson says "On weekdays there were only two regular steam-hauled inter-regionals via Basingstoke – the Pines and the York. The up “Pines Express”, 10.00 Bournemouth West-Manchester Piccadilly. The 10.50 Bournemouth West-York, due Southampton Central 11.52 to11.56.
The station clock is not visible, but I would suggest that the presence of the Standard 4MT in the adjacent platform gives us a clue to 34038 being on the York train. The 4MT has headcode (3,5) = “Salisbury and Southampton via Redbridge”. The passenger trains on this route had long since been taken over by DEMU, but there was a steam-hauled parcels train that would fit the bill – 11.19 Salisbury-Portsmouth & Southsea, due SC 11.59/12.05, around the time that the “York” would have been in the station. The parcels train proceeded to Southampton Terminus (ST) and reversed there before going to Portsmouth & Southsea. I assume that the headcode would be changed to (2,3) at ST, this being the correct code for “all trains terminating at P & S”
