34044 has the duty No. 399, which identifies the train as the up “Pines Express”, 10.00 Bournemouth West-Manchester Piccadilly and is taking on water.

The date of this Jim Carter photo could be either 25th May or June 11th but I suspect the latter due to the Buddlea in flower, also it was often the practice to work this train with the same loco over a number of consecutive days. 34044 did indeed work the train on the following day – Saturday 12/6/65 – this weighs the date in favour of 11/6/65.
