Photographed from Lipson Vale sports arena, 34001 Exeter , the first of the West Country class, is heading away from Plymouth's Southern Region termius station and Motive Power Depot at Friary and climbing up to Lipson Junction from where it will take the Western Region main line into North Road station, thereafter running on the North Dartmoor line via Okehampton to Exeter. Plymouth Laira Motive Power Depot, on the far side of the tracks here is hidden from view behind the banking. This engine was later rebuilt with outside Walschaerts valve gear, when the air smoothed casing was removed.
