34041 1961-11-04 Bournemouth

With 76061.

Pictured at its home depot in late 1961 34041 Wilton had been one of three West Country class sent from their Bournemouth home and reallocated to Bath Green Park in March 1951 for use on the Somerset and Dorset main line, principally on the heavy summer through holiday workings running between Bath and Bournemouth .
Transfer of this engine together with 34040 Crewkerne and 34042 Dorchester had followed an evaluation as to suitability of the class by 34109 Sir Trafford Leigh Mallory but in the event they were not really a good choice , invariably needing to work double-headed and prone to slipping, a familiar characteristic of the class! In May 1954 the three returned to Bournemouth, to be replaced at Bath by BR Standard 4-6-0s 73050, 73051 and 73052.
