34039 1950s Liverpool Street
In 1951 Southern Light Pacifics worked on the GE section due to Britannias having problems with loose driving wheels on their axles. Dates allocated to Stratford were: 34039 Boscastle (5/51-1/52); 34057 Biggin Hill (5/51-5/52); 34059 Sir Archibald Sinclair (4/49-5/49); 34065 Hurricane (5/51-5/52); 34076 41 Squadron (10/51-4/52) and 34089 602 Squadron (10/51-12/51). General workings were; London-Cambridge, London-Norwich/Yarmouth South Town/Parkeston/Clacton via Ipswich and on one occasion 34059 Ipswich to Bury St Edmunds rtn with 6-coach local.
Peter Kerslake adds "The use of 34039 "Sr Archibald Sinclair" on the Eastern Region from 1949 had been in an effort to evaluate the use of the class working out of Statford depot, but the plan was doomed to failure from the outset as expectations were that the depot might be home to the proposed Standard express locomotives, that, in fact, later being the case when the "Britannias" arrrived just a couple of years later.
Notwithstanding this doomed experiment three Bulleids again came to the Eastern Region just two years later as possible substitites for the Eastern's "B1's" and working on secondary passenger duties when 34039 seen here at Liverpool Street appeared at Stratford in May of 1951 followed by 34057 and 34065 following shortly afterwards.
Just five months later in late October 1951 it was necessary to call upon two more Bulleids when 34076 and 34089 helped out when the new "Britannias" were experiencing axle problems, the Bulleids returning home to the Southern Region between January 1952 until June of that year."
