5646 1968 Doncaster Works
Tony Roberts who worked at the Plant says Just out of the Paint Shop, but not yet on test - I hadn't got my 'ands on it! The buffer beam air pipe cock handles are still in the open position from paint brush attention. The 'cables' are flexible armoured hoses to a gauge board hanging from the cab roof gutter, there for use when doing running and brake tests. Normally gauges: Air Brake Pipe (Train Pipe) Pressure, Brake Cylinder Pressure, Loco Main Air Reservoir Pressure and the Vacuum Brake (Train Pipe). We started testing at No.2 end cab due to the electrical control switches for the vacuum exhausters being at that end, moving to No.1 end later. Note also that the radiator louvers are still closed, a sure indicator the the Test Fitter is not 'on board' yet. The grey painted trolley is a battery slave unit, available should a loco have near flat batteries.
This is 5646's October 1968 overhaul, with white air brake cocks. Next overhaul was December 1971 when it was fitted with ETH and was not repainted. However by 1971 a classified repair without a repaint was very unusual, and all of the other ETH conversions were repainted
