D1004 Western Crusader passes Whiteball Siding with the up 'Mayflower' on August 18, 1962.

Peter Kerslake says "Looking her best and well turned out by Laira's cleaners for this "Mayflower" duty D 1004 "Western Crusader" had been delivered newly built from Swindon to Plymouth's Laira Depot in 1962, the fifth of her class to be allocated there with ten more to follow in the following months.
The Paddington bound "Mayflower" of this year, 1962, was the 3 p.m. from Plymouth, the return for the morning's 11:06 a.m. working and "estern Crusader" is heading past signs of track renewal to Whiteball Tunnel and the fast descent down into Taunton.
Withdrawn in August of 1973 "Western Crusader" was an early casualty and followed the first "Western" class withdrawals which had taken place in May of that year."
