D1073 1964-11-07 St Fagans
Western No D1073 Western Bulwark at Pengam with the 9am Paddington-Swansea at St.Georges, St.Fagans on 7 November 1964.
Peter Kerslake says " D1073 "Western Bulwark", the last of its class, had the added distinction of being the last of the 44 'Westerns' constructed at Crewe and one of the five which should have come from Swindon, but delays there saw them built at Crewe instead.
Part of Swindon's slow progress with their planned construction of 35 of the new locomotives were delays in receipt of some of the transmission systems from the German Voith Company and the collapse of the British N.B.R. Company who were also involved in production of those units, and so just 30 of the scheduled 35 were actually built at Swindon .
Seen here at St. Fagans in South Wales D1073 reflects the fact that both Landore and Cardiff Canton depot was closely associated with the class from the outset with over twenty being housed st these depots from newly built, almost as many as at Old Oak Common".
