D1047 'Western Lord' and 57XX 0-6-0PT No 9666 outside Swindon Works on 8th September 1963.
Peter Kerslake says "D1047 "Western Lord" is resplendent in new colours here at a favourite location for photographers within Swindon Works with the massive "A" Shop toweringin the background.
The 1959 building programme had scheduled 74 of the "Western" class main line Diesel locomotives for the Western Region, that number having been reduced from an initial one hundred with construction to be shared between here at Swindon and at Crewe but Swindon fell way behind with its programme and buiilt just thirty compared with Crewe's output of forty four including five which should have come from Swindon where D1029 "Western Legionnaire" was the last of the class to be built in January 1964".
