Peter Kerslake says "One of the batch of ten Standard Class Nine 's built to the design incorporating the Italian Franco Crosti boiller and its asociated equipment 92026 was the first to be later converted to the more conventional design of the majority of he class , such work beginning in September of 1959 and taking three years to complete , the locomotives being stored out of use here at their home shed of Wellingborough during this period .
Disadvantages of the original design far outweighed any anticipated saving in coal consumption with major problems being ingress of smoke into the cabs whilst running plus additional maintenance costs .
This view shows how the long reversing shaft from the cab is higher and more prominent than that of the conventionally designed locomotives, together with the non standard design of smokebox door , both features from the earlier design."
