92183 1964c Spalding

Off 40E Colwick. Northbound freight running into Spalding Town Station; the train has just passed over Winsover Road Crossing, Spalding No2 Signal Box is visible and the train is heading through the station and no doubt will be travelling up the Joint Line.

Peter Kerslake says "Following a series of trials on the Western Region with 92178 conducted in 1957 all the Standard 9F 's from and including 92183 seen here and running up to 92249, the last of the class, were fitted from new with double chimneys, that modification resulting in a substantial increase in performance coupled with significant reduction in coal consumption by those engines so equipped. Just a handful of the original single chimney versions were converted to double chimney form, however, although the Western Region did so modify a few of their original batch, whilst neither the London Midland nor Eastern Region carried out such modifications at all".
