92234 1965-07-09 Gloucester Central

It was good as late as the 9th July of 1965 to see a 2D Banbury allocated 9F looking like this at Gloucester Central, having been through Crewe Works for a Light Intermediate emerging just two days earlier receiving a new paint job in the process. Peter Kerslake’s notes show that it was only the Midland Region 9F's that were still going through works by this date, those allocated to the Western Region no longer doing so. Most of this class coming through Gloucester on the South Wales line were looking pretty much the worse for wear at this, the final year for steam in the area, and it would be only a few months after this image that Severn Tunnel Junction shed would close to steam, thus ending such workings. 92234 has taken on water, with possibly a fresh footplate crew on board as well, and prepares to set off for Wales with a mixed freight. It is 4.40pm on a fine Friday summer afternoon and Peter must have got off work a little early in order to capture this image for us all.
