The iron works at Consett dated back to 1830 when local deposits of iron ore and coal were first identified and despite its being some thousand feet above sea level the works and foundry were in operation at Consett long after those local deposits had run out , with reliance of imported iron ore via Tyne Dock thereafter being crucial in maintaining the operations at Consett. Tests carried out in June of 1955 with New England's 92037 had shown the 9 F to be well up to the demainding duties as by 1954 some fourteen heavily loaded iron ore freights were being worked each day up to Consett with ten Standard Class Nine eventually being shedded at Tyne Dock.
