10800 1950s Derby
No.10800 was built by the North British Locomotive Company for the LMS as a small mixed traffic design producing 827 bhp. The diesel engine and electrical equipment was provided by the British Thomson Houston Company Ltd. No.10800 entered traffic on 29th June 1950 and worked on secondary duties on both the London Midland and Southern Regions.
It spent many months out of service, the first between 1st December 1951 and 20th June 1952 at Derby undergoing a Heavy Classified repair It then had two similar spells at Brighton, from 29th June 1953 to 6th February 1954 and again from 5th April to 7th December 1954, followed soon after by another visit to Derby from 23rd March to 29th December 1956. This photograph was taken during one of its twelve visits there.
It was recorded as 'Out of Service' for over one thousand days in a period of eight years and, not surprisingly, it managed to accumulate only 161,933 miles in this time before it was finally put out of its misery in August 1959.
