480 1880s Taunton

480 1880s Taunton

The first GWR standard gauge passenger tender engines built at Swindon were Joseph Armstrong's '378' or 'Sir Daniel' class. There were thirty built between 1866 and 1869. Most were later converted by Dean in 1902 to 0-6-0s and the last of these survived until 1920. No. 480 is seen at Taunton Station circa 1880, having received a slightly modified cab and chimney style. 480 was built at Swindon in Sept. 1869, converted to an 0-6-0 but her withdrawal date is unknown. This photo was restored from a period 8"x10" sepia print. Hard work!
