At 01.30 on Sunday August 24th 1975, 47207 working the 0M54 01.05 (Sun only) light diesel from Motherwell MPD to Carlisle Station running at approx 55mph, ran into the back of eight parcels vans at Carstairs Station. These had been detached from 1S78 2135 (Sat only) Manchester –Aberdeen and were being propelled by 25231 onto the main line passed a signal where the red aspect had failed. Unfortunately both driver & second man were killed.
