470xx 1975 Dawlish Warren

470xx 1975 Dawlish Warren

One of those unexplained light engine movements.

An impressive view taken from Langstone Rock with the River Exe in the background and the far bank at Lympstone also visible .
Look at those impressive boulders used for protection from the sea , although it's rather more sheltered here than further down the line at Dawlish itself, and Teignmouth, which are both more exposed to the ravages of the sea as recent events have yet again demonstrated.

Our cameraman is high on Langstone Rock , a favourite vantage point , this site having originally been an unbroken headland until Mr . Brunel cut a deep single track line through for his railway , later doubling the line with the cliffs cut back further in 1911 and the soil from such excavations being used in the construction of Dawlish Warren station .
The rocks seen here on the right date from about 1920 , a temporary siding having been laid to transport them for use as sea defences , that siding remaining in position until 1941 .
Today' track layout , as seen here , is further inland than the original which ran closer to the wall and walkway on the right
