47256 1974 Dainton Tunnel
A Canton Veteran that hung onto green. Note the replacement 1965 BR all wood signal box.
Not quite so neglected and overgrown as it is today , but this view of the Western portal of Dainton tunnel shows that the siding on the left is sadly neglected from the days when it housed the banking engines after they had assisted freights up the one in thirty six gradient from Totnes .
That siding is on the level , and so this view clearly indicates the steepness of the drop down the bank, with a poor substitute for the former delightful little Great Western signal box which is hiding the similar siding on the " Down " side , used for the bankers which had worked up from Aller Junction on the other side of the equally severe climb westwards.
