These Derby built high-density three car units, later ‘Class 116’, were little different from the steam stock they replaced in June 1957 when DMUs took over most of the suburban services from Birmingham Snow Hill. The seating was cramped and the slam doors to each bay and the droplight windows were draughty. They were painted in drab unlined Brunswick green relieved only by yellow ‘speed whiskers’ and the white fibreglass cab roof. This unit was on a Snow Hill to Wellington service. David J. Hayes adds' The service is approaching Wednesbury Central having emerged a few seconds earlier from Hill Top Tunnel. The line seen here was once part of the GWR's main line from Paddington to Birkenhead Woodside. It lost its main line status in March 1967 and closed to passenger services in March 1972, although the section seen here remained in use for coal traffic between Wednesbury and Swan village until December 1981. The former GWR trackbed between Birmingham and Wolverhampton today forms much of the Midland Metro, which opened in May 1999'.
