5009 1939-08-10 Invershin

Ex-Highland Railway P. Drummond 'Barney' class 0-6-0 No. 17703 (pilot). Built by NBL of Glasgow in July 1907 as HR No. 36 and withdrawn in June 1947. LMS Stanier 'Black 5' class 4-6-0 No. 5009 (train). Built at Crewe in Apr. 1935 and withdrawn in Nov. 1965 as BR No. 45009. The mid-1930s arrival of the Stanier 'Black 5s' ousted many older Highland Railway types from their roles. 61 miles north of Inverness is Invershin Station, seen in August 1939 one month before we declare war on Hitler. Railway photography will shortly become illicit, so 'just in time' scenes like this double-headed northbound gem are a real treasure.
