3249 1938-05-01 Crewe Works
In May 1938 Crewe Works was still using these fascinatingly archaic 0-4-2 crane tank locomotives that had a 3 ton lifting capacity. Although older steam locomotives were still in use on the LMS, the 'oven door' smokebox secured by a chain when open, gave a particularly ancient appearance to 1894 built No. 3249. Its old L&NWR numberplate was retained until its withdrawal in 1947.
