Black Five No 5029 at Blair Atholl with an up cattle train when new in autumn 1934. The leading four vehicles are former Highland Railway bolster wagons and are loaded with rails.
Alistair B Moffat says "The date and time of year would suggest that this train consisting of such a large number of "cattle" wagons would be bound for the Far North Line. The intended live stock being not cattle but sheep from the Lairg lamb sheep sales which at that time was the largest such sale in the UK. This annual sale continued to send sheep well into the late steam period. Like much of the rail traffic it was replaced by road haulage in the late nineteen sixties. My own memory of this period being the sad sight of a lengthy train of these wagons being hauled to the scrapyard from the meat market sidings at Bellgrove in the east end of Glasgow. The motive power being a K4 61994 The Great Marquess which by this time I believe, was based at 62A Thornton. The hauling power of the K4 class was well expressed by the Eastfield view of 61998 MacLeod of MacLeod on engineering trains. "Yon ingin wid pul a tenement hoose."
