65216 1954-07 Carlisle Canal MPD

In pre-grouping days Carlisle could boast seven different locomotive sheds. Upperby (L&NWR), London Road (NER), Durran Hill (MR), Kingmoor (CR), Currock (M&CR), Harraby (G&SWR) and as seen here, Canal (NBR). In July 1954, Canal's yard sees ex-NBR Holmes 'C' (LNER 'J36') 65216 'Byng'. It was one of 25 'C' class loaned to the ROD for overseas service in WW1. On return, these received names of military campaigns and noted commanding officers. Julian Byng was commander of the Canadian Corps, achieving a noted victory at Vimy in April 1917.
