Peter Kerslake says "Former L.M.S. Diesel 10001 taken in difficult surroundings but with a fair amount of light which has helped the cameraman at Brighton Works with 80014 alongside. Note the communicating doors fitted to the nose of 10001 used for when 10001 and 10000 had been working together on the West Coast main line and the photograph dates from after they had been transferred from the London Midland Region to the Southern Region in March 1953. Both locomotives were intended for duties working from Nine Elms on "Out and Back" express passenger duties from Waterloo to Exeter Central and returning the same day.
The move was not a happy one, however, as both diesels suffered a series of failures whilst on the Southern and were sent back to Camden in March 1955."
