The West Highland extension from Fort William to Mallaig was the home of LNER K1 and the Gresley K2 2-6-0s transferred to Scotland after the Grouping. The turnatable at Mallaig was unable to accommodate 4-6-0s so moguls were the principal motive power between Fort William and Mallaig until the end of steam haulage in 1961.
