62060 1967 Boldon Colliery station

62060 1967 Boldon Colliery station

Peppercorn K1 No.62060 passes Boldon Colliery signal box and the station with a train from Tyne Dock in 1967. This box controlled Brockley Whins Junction where the Tyne Dock freight branch turned off the Sunderland line, the actual colliery being on the Tyne Dock to Washington ‘NER Pontop and South Shields branch’ a good mile’s walk from this station. Note the lower quadrant NER signal that remained in use until colour lights were installed. Strangely the K1 retains its 50A York shed plate; it left there in August 1966 for North Blyth and was now allocated to Tyne Dock, clearly this detail was not lost on the local enthusiasts who painted it up.
