LYR 1105 1922 Blackpool Central MPD

Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Aspinall '7ft. 3in.' or 'Flier' class 4-4-0 No. 1105. Built at Horwich in August. 1881, rebuilt in 1909 with Schmidt superheater, Walschaerts valve gear and piston valves and withdrawn in December 1924. Seen at Blackpool Central MPD in 1922, the unmistakeable lines of a locomotive designed by John Aspinall are nicely captured in this fine portrait. Note the lovely, elaborate brickwork of the chimney behind. Victorian builders didn't have to do this, they just did because it was going to last for centuries - wasn't it?
