334 1938c Andover

334 1938c Andover

H15 4-6-0 No 334 heads away from Andover near Red Post Junction with a Waterloo to Salisbury semi-fast. Originally this was thought to be a 1920s shot but there are other photos taken on the same day which indicate 1938 at the earliest, and indeed here there is a modern flush sided coach as the rear vehicle. As Mike Barnsley points out Another clue as to the later date is that the number on the tender is just "334", not "E 334"

Peter Swift gives us the details "The loco is an H15 class which at this period was based at Salisbury and is at the head of Salisbury duty 448. Don’t have workings for this period but possibly a Waterloo – Salisbury semi-fast.
The coaching stock does help date it. Leading is a 3-Lav set. These were initially 4-coach LSWR cross-counry sets but with the downturn in passenger numbers the Southern reformed these sets in the mid-1930s – reducing them to 3-coach sets by withdrawing the two centre coaches and inserting a new 58’ Composite (I say new but they were made up from older 48’ bodies that were extended and placed on new steel underframes). The set is one of 25 consisting of two D125 Brake Thirds (with double sliding doors) and a D285 Composite. These sets were formed between October 1935 and December 1936.
Trailing is a new(ish) Maunsell D2007 open-saloon Third, which were introduced as from July 1935. If th1s photo was taken around the same time as the others at this location it could be either the 10.54 or 11.54 Waterloo – Salisbury trains due at Andover Junction at 12.52 or 1.52 respectively Monday to Friday or just the 11.54 if a Saturday.
