Once released from Crewe Works after overhaul, locomotives would be on local 'running-in' duties to ensure that they were in good order before returning to their home depots. Ex-LMS Stanier '4P' 42554 at Crewe on station pilot duties in 1951. It had been built by NBL of Glasgow in July 1936 and would be withdrawn in April 1965.
