The first vehicle is very interesting being one of the two former LNWR Holywell 'motor train' coaches to Diagram M.3. These were formerly 42ft 0in x 8ft 0in sleeping (later picnic) saloons built in 1885 and converted for 'pull push' or 'motor' working. Philip Millard believes that the coach is the former LNWR No.2136A in (unrecorded) departmental use. It was re-numbered 10582 and then 975 by the LMS and was withdrawn in February 1935. It appears to be in excellent condition after nearly 20 years in departmental service with either the Civil or more likely S&T Engineers, perhaps as some sort of test or observation vehicle. That would explain the chap looking out of a door droplight holding a trilby hat in his hand -typical attire of mid-level railway managers, we are sure it is not carrying fare paying passengers and, despite the headlamps, this might even be an ECS movement.
