Unidentified Great Eastern Railway James Holden 'Claud Hamilton' class 4-4-0. Built at Stratford, one of a class of 121 locomotives built from 1900 and withdrawn between 1945 and 1960. Resplendent in the GER's deep blue livery, this 'Claud Hamilton' is in charge of an up express at Dringhouses on the southern outskirts of York, probably circa 1910. The view is looking towards the city from St. Helen's Road bridge. On the right of the picture, immediately beyond the gantry is where the large Dringhouses railway yard was to be built during WW1. Note the rake of NER small hopper wagons in the foreground, pictures of their interior showing the sloping floors are not common.
