8866 1933-06-04 Cambridge MPD
Ex-Great Eastern Railway J. Holden 'D16/3' class 4-4-0 No. 8866. Built at Stratford in September 1903 as GER No. 1866. Rebuilt from class 'D14' to class 'D15' in June 1923 and to class 'D16/3' in March 1933. Withdrawn in September 1945.
The MPD yard at Cambridge in June 1933 is the scene for 8866. Apart from the L&NWR Webb 0-8-0s, the ex-GER 4-4-0s of the 'D14', 'D15' and 'D16' classes were amongst the most rebuilt post-grouping locomotives. Constant upgrading to extend their lives and usefulness was the order of the day.
