Great Northern Railway Ivatt 'C1' class 4-4-2 No. 271. Built at Doncaster in July 1902 and withdrawn in June 1936 as LNER No. 3271. This is the unique experimental 4-cylinder 'C1' photographed at York MPD in March 1908. It offers a particularly detailed view of the Walschaerts valve gear for the outside cylinders. The experiment was not particularly successful and 271 was rebuilt to the standard 2-cylinder configuration in July 1911.
