Henry Ivatt of the Great Northern Railway introduced Britain's first 'Atlantic' (4-4-2) locomotive 'C1' class No. GNR 990, built at Doncaster in May 1898. It was celebrated by receiving a name, the only Great Northern Railway engine to be so honoured until Gresley's 'A1s' (later 'A3s') of 1923. Named 'Henry Oakley' after the GNR's General Manager, its historic impotance was recognised by the LNER and upon withdrawal in October 1937 it was preserved and restored to GNR livery. This 1930s photograph taken at Doncaster MPD, is one of relatively few of the locomotive in LNER days.
