43017 1950s Birmingham New Street

The Ivatt ‘4MT’ 2-6-0s were a common sight on the Midland Division side of Birmingham New Street on station pilot duties and worked local passenger services and empty stock trains. They were regulars on the Redditch-Ashchurch branch working the passenger services right up to closure in June 1963; No.43017 will either be working a local to there or to Evesham. It had been transferred to Bath from Saltley in December 1949, but moved back there by the end of 1953 and stayed until 1964 when it moved to Bletchley. This picture was taken after the replacement of its original double chimney in February 1954 and shows the spacious effect of the high roof on the Midland side of the station; the train is at Platform 9..
