43001 1961-09-02 Nuneaton

Ivatt ‘4MT’ No.43001 at Nuneaton on 2nd September 1961 was fitted with AWS in August 1960. It has its original tender with the square step which was a trap for the unwary footplateman. The tender has one of those mysterious bars at the rear of the coal space which were probably fitted to warn against the proximity of overhead wires, although no other class with a similar pattern tender was ever fitted with these bars. No.43001 moved to the Midlands shed from Devons Road in October 1957, when that depot was taken over by diesels, and stayed until October 1962 when it went to Bescot.
