7211 1964-04-17 Pantyffynon
The impressive bunker on Collett's massive heavy freight 7211 is shown to advantage in this view, the engine having being built at Swindon during 1934, one of the initial batch of twenty which were rebuilds of Churchward's unused, earlier and lighter 5205 class . Those earlier locomotives, introduced in 1923, had a limited four ton coal coal capacity bunker which had restricted their use and the twenty later members of the class, built in 1930 went straight into storage from new, remaining unused until they were the first to be rebuilt as 7200 to 7219 inclusive . The rebuilt engines incorporated the larger bunker shown here, now holding six tons and made possible by the extended rear main frames and the additional pony truck which had been added. Used primarily on heavy coal and mineral traffic within and around South Wales my 1956 shed book shows that no less than fifty were to be found at a wide variety of Welsh Motive Depots, with just one at both Oxley and Bristol St. Philip's Marsh, and four at Oxford. 7253 was used as a Lickey banker in 1958, but its restricted platform clearance at Bromsgrove proved it to be unsuitable, whilst three were used from Newton Abbot in the mid ' fifties on the South Devon banks
