7252 1960s Newport
The GWR would have called the leading vehicle a Crocodile but by now it is a Weltrol
This shot shows the massive bulk of this member of the " 7240 class " , with Barry shed's 7252 heading a formidable freight through Newport , the engine having been rebuilt at Swindon in 1939 from the original 4210 , one of the " 4200 class " which had been in store and out of use for some considerable period of time .
7252 was destined to be one of the last to be withdrawn in 1965 , the class working mainly on mineral and coal duties to and from South Wales , with virtually the whole class being allocated to Welsh Motive Power Depots , although three of the class were used on banking duties over the South West banks between Plymouth and Newton Abbot just after 1945 , and sister engine 7253 even found herself acting as the Lickey Banking engine although her bulk proved to be too much for the clearances required at Bromsgrove station.
