1609 1972c Twyford West box
On the Down Main Line heading west with a car train of early mk3 cortinas. It was probably a Dagenham- Severn Tunnel Junction working; for many years, Ford had a terminal on the site of the former STJ steam shed. The location from which the photo was taken is known as Land's End although the pub of that name is a little way off and nowhere near the railway. Mike says I reckon it is what was shown in the 1967-68 Winter WTT as 3V15 09.40 SX Dagenham Dock to Severn Tunnel Jcn. This was the only Class 3 train coming over Acton Wells at that date (although it could possibly be a special - but I doubt it). It had presumably been re-classified 4V35.I can't find it in the 1966-67 Section PA WTT which seems to indicate that it didn't start running as a WTT train until sometime in 1967 although it might possibly have run on a Special Traffic basis before then. David J. Hayes adds If I may add a further snippet of information to this fine period study and back up some of what has already been mentioned, as of the May 1972 Mandatory WTT 4V35 ran as the 09:40 SO/09:43 TThO Air-Braked COY service from Dagenham Dock to Severn Tunnel Junction
