Welbeck colliery to Northfleet MGR train made up of 40 wagons.David J Hayes adds The new Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers (later Blue Circle) cement works at Northfleet opened in 1970. Although the following information post-dates this image, as of the May-Oct 1971 WTT, train 6O62 ran as the 10:36 SSuX COY service from Welbeck Colliery to Northfleet APCM. The service called at Toton Centre (12:15-13:14 SSuX) for a crew/loco change and an examination, and went forward via the Corby line (Manton Jn. to Glendon South Jn.). There was a second booked departure later in the afternoon from Welbeck to Northfleet (see the pair of Class 37s image taken at Ilkeston). I was wondering if the cracking picture seen here, taken on the West London Line at Kensington Olympia, was the usual routing for Merry-Go-Round coal trains from Welbeck to Northfleet during the early 1970s, as they were later routed via the Dudding Hill Jn. line and South Acton to reach Southern Region metals at Kew.? Further information has come to light regarding this working. It would appear that the service at this time was booked to reach London by traversing the southern section of the West Coast Main Line, which was probably accessed at Northampton (having traversed the line from Market Harborough) or possibly even at Bletchley (having traversed the line from Bedford).
