Peter Kerslake says "Upon the closure of Gloucester's London Midland Region shed at Barnwood in May 1964 it was thereafter used just as a temporary store for the large number of condemned locomotives passing through Gloucester on their way to the South Wales breakers' yards. As a result of such closure Midland Region locomotives were , during the final months of steam workings within the Gloucester area, serviced at Gloucester's Western Region shed at Horton Road, and my photograph shows a presentable looking 44776 in the afternoon sunlight on Horton Road at the start of the area's final year of steam workings. By the end of that year the few remaining Motive Power Depots withi the area had all closed to steam and it was all over."
