46170 1962-04-08 Wigan Springs Branch

The unique No. 46170 British Legion on 8th April 1962 crossing from the Up Fast to the Up Slow with a Carlisle-Edge Hill freight consisting mainly of cattle empties bound for Garston Dock, which at that time was still importing large quantities of cattle ‘on the hoof’ from Ireland. No. 46170 was rebuilt with a taper boiler in 1935 from the ill-fated experimental No. 6399 Fury. The 70 ‘Royal Scots’ were fitted with a similar design of boiler from 1943 onwards after the initial steaming problems of British Legion’s boiler had been cured.
