DMU 1960s Leeds City
I assume that some track lifting and ballast tamping was imminent. Ballast appears to have been just dumped, it looks as though the point motor has been covered in preparation but the rail heads have not been cleaned. We believe this is 1961 when the Canal Bridge was being replaced. The bridge is behind the photographer hence the ballast all over the track. A temporary connection was laid through the loco service area in the adjacent Wellington station and this is what the DMU is traversing, very slowly I suspect as there was a difference in track level of a few feet!
