Dean 3031 class 4-2-2 No 3026 Tornado leaves Teignmouth under Eastcliffe bridge with an up express in 1903.
Peter Kerslake says "This classic image of the "Achilles" class 4-2-2 shows it passing through what used to be a tunnel at Eastcliffe, with Teignmouth station beyond the furthermost bridge.
Built originally as a broad gauge 2-2-2 in 1891 this engine was converted to standard gauge in 1892 and two years later was altered to a 4-2-2 wheel arrangement, lasting in service until early 1909.
How fitting that fifty years later from this view another Tornado would regularly take this line from its home at Newton Abbot when 'Britannia' 70022 came into service.
The location here is virtually unchanged today, the two bridges are still there and the facing stone wall at the end of the footpath housed a lookout post during the last war as a protection to this vital stretch of line from enemy action from the sea."
