A classic example of wasted taxpayers money:
Class J39 0-6-0 No 64727, allocated to Gorton shed was sent all the way to Glasgow to have a replacement boiler fitted. In all probability this work could have been carried out at Gorton works, but a round trip of 450 miles was deemed necessary instead.
In this photograph taken at Eastfield on 22nd April 1962, the freshly repainted engine is ready to be returned to Manchester with the work completed. Less than 6 months later, on 15th October, the engine was condemned and cut up at Darlington.
