D6554 1961-05 Sturry
Brand spanking new, not long after the delivery run from Birmingham to the Southern Region for acceptance, clearly it has made it onto the SR but came without a location.
Alan Goodwin says " This looks very much like Sturry, Kent", in which case it would most likely to be under test from Ashford Works.
After doing a bit of searching I found a very modern view which seemed to confirm as the lie of the land, fencing and position of telephone poles are all consistent. Furthermore there is the top of a petrol pump in the original photo (immediately to the left of D6554 cab) and the 1971 map of the station shows a ‘filling station’ in the correct position. Therefore I am pretty certain he is correct and it is Sturry looking towards Margate.
