31308 1961 Paddock Wood
Platform view showing the Signal Box with H Class 0-4-4T 31308 signalled for Maidstone West whilst the H class plus push-pull in the up bay will be for Hawkhurst.. The platforms are being re-built at a higher level.
This will be late early 1961 in preparation for electrification. Note the 2 HAP EMUs stabled beyond the down platform on the left, so almost certainly just before the June 1961 electric services began. The third rail was laid ready for the start of electric services from 12th June 1961. The electric services ran to the steam timetable from this date until the start of the summer services in June 1962 when the timetable was completely recast and accelerated following completion of electrication on the Maidstone East - Ashford and Ashford - Canterbury West - Minster sections and re-signalling on the main line with colour lights as far as Dover Marine. No sign of colour lights here yet and it remained this way after electric services began in June 1961 until Tonbridge power box was commissioned. There also remained some steam also - Robert Waterman remembers seeing a class N 2-6-0 shunting at Margate in August 1961 and BR 4MTT 80xxx tanks shunting at Ashford in the spring of 1962.
