5074 1963-04-14 Cardiff East Dock

In pouring rain we see GWR Castle Class 4-6-0s Nos 5074 Hampden and 4080 Powderham Castle and Hall No 4953 Pitchford Hall in store at Cardiff East Dock shed on 14 April 1963.

Peter Kerslake says "In April of 1963, Canton has closed and most of its engine are now here at East Dock but not wanted as the Diesels had taken over on the main line services to Paddington, the "Kings" had left Canton the previous years and the highly respected Canton "Britannias" had all gone to the Midland Region as well.
Neither 5074 nor 4080 were to remain here at East Dock as 5074, built in July 1938 and serving at Old Oak Common, Canton, Landore, Neath and Llanelly in happier times ended up moving from East Dock to Bristol St. Philips Marsh not long after this view, from where it was condemned in May of 1964.
4080 "Powderham Castle", earlier allocated to Canton and five months after this photograph moving to Southll was withdrawn from there just eleven months later."
